Oakley Elementary School hosted a Family Engagement Night last Thursday. The event was held at Oakley as well as 3 neighborhoods where many Oakley families live.

“We wanted to take the curriculum into the community, providing greater access to parents and students,” said Principal Danny Fusco.

Parents appreciated the opportunity to choose a location that was most convenient for their schedule. One parent at Ledgewood apartments said, “We love that y’all did this at four locations. We came to one outside of our neighborhood to meet other families. Awesome job!”

Teachers were excited to share literacy, math, and science activities with families. The literacy activity offered students and parents the opportunity to create their own set of story stones, which can be used to help student comprehension. Each student also chose a book to take home. There were several math games for students to play with their parents. Students received a set of counters or a deck of cards as well as directions for playing the games at home. The highlight of the night was the science activity: making ice cream! Students enjoyed a tasty treat created with their own hands while learning about liquids, solids, and the properties of matter.

“This was the perfect activity, said one parent.

Title I Lead Teacher Angela Ensley has made building the relationships between parents, students, school, and community a top priority this year.

“Nothing is more important to a child’s education than the involvement of parents, “ said Instructional Coach Millie Stubbs.

Oakley Elementary looks forward to hosting its next Parent Engagement Night.
