Alexander, April (5th Grade)

Welcome to my Classroom
Ms. April Alexander

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to fifth grade! I look forward to building a classroom community in which we are respectful of each other and go home each day excited about learning. Teaching is my passion, and I can assure you that I am very excited about this school year.

In May of 2007, I graduated from Western North Carolina University with my Masters degree in education. For undergrad, I attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where I received a degree in both psychology and K-6 education. I student taught in third grade at Candler Elementary School, and after college graduation I taught a six week interim in 5th grade at West Buncombe Elementary School. I then moved to Gastonia, NC (right outside of Charlotte) where I taught 1st grade at an inner city school. I then returned to my hometown of Asheville and began teaching here at Oakley.

I  love to read. My two most recent reads were Sing me Home by Jodi Piccoult and The 7 Keys to Comprehension by Stephanie Harvey. My favorite children’s novels are Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech and Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I am an avid writer. One of my goals for the near future is to look into publishing some of my writing for young adults. In school, math was a struggle for me, but now I am really excited about math.  We teach the students in ways that also helped me understand how numbers work together. Now, math is one of my favorite subjects to teach. Sports are one of my biggest passions, and I feel that a lot of children need kinesthetic engagement throughout the day. I try to incorporate physical activity in classroom instruction to keep all of my students engaged and interested :).

I know that you will support me this year in helping your child meet his/her academic and social goals. I strive to help students become more independent in their study habits, but they still need to know that you and I support them. I hope that you will stay close in touch, and let me know of your questions or concerns as well as your confidence in your child’s learning. I look forward to our partnership in making this a productive and happy year for your child.

Sincerely yours,

                                                                                                   April Alexander
