Flores, Deborah (ESL)

                                 Welcome to my Classroom

                                                             Deborah Vasilenko Flores

I am originally from NJ where I began my teaching career as an ESL teacher to students from all over the world. Since then I have also taught Elementary, Middle School and High School Spanish, Reading K-5 and Adult ESL and Spanish. I am certified to teach Language Arts 6-12, ESL K-12, Spanish K-12, Reading K-12 and Reading Recovery. I have been teaching in a variety of capacities for over 20 years.

My father's parents were from Slovakia. I feel blessed to have had a multi-cultural family experience, and loved being raised in an area of the country that was very rich in cultural diversity.

My passion for teaching started when I was in kindergarten! I feel called to and specially gifted for this profession. My love for language and culture began in Middle School where I met my first Hispanic friend. I have lived, studied and traveled in Spain and Mexico.

I have served as a bilingual medical interpreter for Park Ridge Hospital where I especially enjoyed working in the maternity department helping birth babies!

I moved to Hendersonville, NC in 1987 where I currently reside with my husband.  We have one son who is on active duty as a Navy reservist.  My husband and I love gardening and have lots of flower, vegetable and fruit tree gardens. We have also started raising chickens.
I am delighted to be working with the wonderful staff and children at Oakley Elementary and look forward to many more fun-filled years of learning and growth both for my students and myself.
