Physical Education at Oakley Elementary School
provides a variety of activities that teach fitness, basic skills,
games, and sports.
Fitness activities for
all grade levels include the Fitness Test as well as fitness circuits
and activities that enhance a child's muscular strength, muscular
endurance, cardio respiratory endurance, and flexibility.
Basic skills are
taught in kindergarten through second grade and include activities that
enhance a child's skill in catching, throwing, striking, kicking,
tumbling, balance, and rhythm.
Games for all grade
levels include practice of basic skills in a fun and non-competitive
activity such as relays, rope jumping, parachute, four square, and
creative time using balls, hula-hoops, beanbags, scoops, jump ropes, and
paddles.
Sports for second
through fifth grades include learning the basic skills and rules of
soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, hockey, and
baseball using non-threatening equipment. For example, beach balls in
volleyball, nerf tennis balls, and plastic bat and wiffle ball.
Oakley's Physical
Education program is designed not only to enhance a child's physical
fitness and skills, but also to create a more positive self-image, more
desirable social behavior, and the joy of feeling healthy.
